Excerpts from “ Esoteric Astrology ” by Alice Bailey Cancer (pp.311-343): 1. The keynote of this sign may be expressed in the Biblical words: “ the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters .” In Cancer God breathed into man's nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul. Cancer is the light within the form. It is the scattered light of the matter itself, the “dark light” of the matter described in the “Secret Doctrine.” This is the light awaiting the stimulation from the soul. 2. This constellation symbolizes the will of the masses, and influences the reactions of the masses of people and their psychology. It focuses the will of masses via the means of mass consciousness – this is still largely unknown, but one can see the glimpses of this knowledge in such a factor of human life as “public opinion.” 3. Cancer is a place of a symbolic prison . It brings the torments and the punishment for the incorrect orientation . Here a conflict between the soul and its environment begins, whether conscious or unconscious. This creates the conditions of struggle and suffering, which the soul willingly takes upon itself when it chooses life on earth, in order to save the lives it is related to. 4. In Cancer the living substance took form of a triple differentiated relationship to which we give the names of Life (Aries – a Ram), of Consciousness (Taurus – a Bull) and manifested duality (Gemini – the Twins), and these three blended together come into manifestation in Cancer. A blind unit/mass of people are awakened to their surroundings. In the end unity is seen. Humanity arises. Cancer awakens to life in Leo . 5. The soul comes into repeated incarnations not for pleasure, but for the sacrifice and service to those lesser lives that are dependent upon the higher inspiration. This sacrifice is made with a firm belief that they too can reach the status of a sacrificing soul . 6. There are the two doors in the Zodiac. Cancer is the wide gate of incarnation or manifestation on Earth in a form. People reincarnate in Cancer because of the impulse of self-preservation. The second gate - in Capricorn - leads to “immortality”, which is a form of divine self-preservation. 7. In Cancer we start the evolution of the form. The slow moving Cancer/the Crab is identified with its dwelling place (a form) and carries his house upon its back. It lives upon the land (physical plane of life) and also in the sea (the life of emotions) It stands for the desire of our soul to return into incarnation time after time till form perfection is reached, and the form becomes one with the will and knowledge of the plan of God. 8. Cancer – is responsible for mass consciousness – instinctual awareness. It is opposite of group consciousness. 9. The point of greatest interest lies in the fact that in Cancer group rebirth is taking place all the time. We do not come to the Earth alone. We come as generations, because we have common goals and shared work with our contemporaries. 10. The rulers of the sign are Moon (exoteric) and Moon (esoteric) and Moon veiling Neptune (hierarchical). Moon and Neptune – are direct influences on the person in Cancer. They lead to evolution of the form and emotional-astral body. 11. Saturn falls in this sign. 12. The rulers of the 3 decanates of Cancer are Venus, Mercury and the Moon. This sign carries deep meaning to all. You are in a process of incarnation; you are following your chosen way. Is the house you are building yet lit? Is it a lighted house? Or is it a dark prison? If it is a lighted house, you will attract to its light and warmth all who are around you and the magnetic pull of your soul, whose nature is light and love, will save many. If you are still an isolated soul, you will have to pass through the horrors of more complete isolation and loneliness and this separation in the dark night are all part of the Great Illusion. It is, however an illusion into which the whole humanity is now precipitated in preparation for unity, freedom and release. Some walk free in the world of illusion for the purposes of saving and lifting their brothers, and if you cannot do this, you will have to learn so to walk .
